Here are some of the frequently asked questions we’ve been hearing about Mahjong March Madness at the Phoenixville Area Senior Center.  If you have a question that is not addressed here, please reach out to us at news@phoenixvilleseniorcenter.org or 610-935-1515.

A: The event is at the Phoenixville Area Senior Center, which is located at 153 Church Street, Phoenixville, PA 19460.

Q: When is the event?

A: Thursday, March 19th.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: $25 to play and eat dinner.  The price increases to $30 after March 16th.  Registration closes on March 18th.

Q: How do I sign up?

A: You can sign up online at https://givebutter.com/PASC3rdThurs

Q: When does the event start?

A: Dinner is at 4pm and play begins at 5pm.

Q: What is dinner?

A: Dinner will be pork egg rolls, sweet and sour chicken, vegetable fried rice, and fortune cookies.  Prepared by our fantastic chef Brian.

Q: How many rounds/games will we play?

A: There will be 4 rounds of 2 games each.

Q: How do the rounds work and is there a time limit?

A: For each of the 4 rounds, you will be seated at a table with 3-4 players.  You will have 25 minutes to complete 2 games/hands with those players.  If you are unable to complete the second game, it will be scored as a draw.

Q: How will scoring work?

A: At the end of each game, each table will complete a result slip and note the winner for the game, or that the game was a draw.  The result slips will be returned to the scorekeeper.  Each win will be worth 4 points to the winner, and a draw will be worth 1 point to each player at the table.

Q: Will players change tables?

A: Yes.  Players will be assigned to a table each round.

Q: How will pairing/seating work?

A: The scorekeeper will assign new tables each round based on points.  This means that the players who have won more points will be seated with players with a similar number of points.  (The tournament will be paired using modified Swiss pairings – not round robin style.)

Q: What are the tournament rules?

A: Players are expected to provide their own 2025 Mahjong rule card.  Players exhibiting poor sporting conduct will be given a written warning for the first offense and be disqualified without prize for any further offenses.

Q: Will there be prizes?

A: Yes!  There will be door prizes and cash prizes for the top 4 players.

Q: How will the top 4 players be determined?

A: Final standings will be calculated based on total game points.  The tiebreaker will be opponents’ win percentage.
